Joe Davis (15 April 1901 - 10 July 1978), born in Whitwell, Derbyshire, was an English professional snooker and billiards player, generally regarded as the father of modern snooker, and one of the greatest players of all time.
Winner of the very first World Snooker Championships in 1927, he went on to win every world championship until 1946,when he retired from the event. Joe Davis also recorded the first officially recognised maximum break of 147 in a 1955 exhibition match at Leicester Square.
